The Top 5 Multi-Tasking Tips for Pumping Mamas

Whether you just pump at work, or you are an exclusive pumper, pumping is very time-consuming. Sometimes I feel like that’s all I do is sit hooked up to my pump all day. I went back to work when my daughter was just 7 weeks. It was extremely hard and it still is, but while I pump at work, I use to help keep our household going.

There are some things you can do to survive pumping for so long every day. You may feel like you are just getting things done around the house, and then all of the sudden you have to stop because it is time to pump again. I feel like this almost every day. If I am cleaning or organizing, I try to save things I know I need to be sitting for while I pump.

It doesn’t always happen this way. When you have a 6-month-old they tend to run the show! But for the times when she is either napping or happily playing I can get things done!

Here are my top-5 multi-tasking tips for all you busy mamas!

A Great Time to Plan Your Days!

If you like to use a planner then this can be the perfect time to write things down and keep track of your families activities. I love planners, and I can’t wait for the time of year when new ones come out! I write down meals for the coming week, or when bills are due, any family gatherings or trips, or any general upcoming events.

I definitely don’t have it all together, but seeing things written down makes me feel like I have it somewhat together! Plus all the stickers are so fun and cute!

The planner that I use, and really like is Create 365 The Happy Planner. There are a few different designs that you can get to fit your style. It is very customizable. Being a creative, I love this about them. I do recommend getting a pre-dated one. It is less hassle and being a busy mama, I don’t have time for that! There are tons of cute stickers and add-ons you can get to personalize it to your needs and wants!

There are also planner apps that you can use. If you prefer a digital version this is a great option! Most of the planning apps that I have seen can set reminders for you. You can do this with family events or paying bills.

Meal planning for the Fam

One thing I have been trying to do lately is a meal plan for our family. I want to get in the habit of planning meals because my daughter will soon be eating solid food.

Meal planning helps with:

  • Saving Money
  • Saving Time
  • Feeling Prepared

I find that I don’t go as crazy with the groceries when I know exactly what I need to get. I can quickly run to the store while my husband watches the baby, and grab things for dinner and lunches.

Many busy mamas have their own way of meal planning. The way that I plan meals is to write the name of the meal for each day, and then make a grocery list from the meals I have picked out.

For example, if we are having tacos on Monday I will write Tacos down for Monday night. Then I’ll write down on my grocery list all the items that I will need to make tacos such as taco shells, lettuce, cheese, ground beef, etc.

Planning lunches also can help with:

  • Saving time
  • Saving money
  • Saving a mama’s sanity
  • Using up leftovers

Once I have gone through and written down what we will have for dinner, I will then decide which days I want to take leftovers from dinner the night before. After that, I’ll fill in the blanks with simple lunch items such as salads, wraps or, fruits and veggies. From here I’ll add the lunch items I’ll need to my grocery list.

You can do this as far in advance as you would like to. If it’s too much to do a week then start out with just a couple days and see how it goes. Once you get the hang of planning a couple days ahead then try a week. Eventually, you can work up to a couple weeks in advance and do some bulk grocery shopping.

Pay Bills online

I’m sure like everyone else on the planet, I hate paying bills. But, while you are pumping this can be a good time to pay bills. It seems like in today’s world almost all bills can be paid online. A lot of bills are probably automated, but there are the select few that you have to remember to pay every month. Even if you have to call to make the payment, you are still sitting so this can be a good way to stay on top of things.

Pumping while working from home

Pumping, in general, is quite the task. If you work from home, you are no stranger to multi-tasking. Between taking care of the babies, keeping up with housework, and finding time to pump your day can be over before you know it.

There are pumps that allow you to be mobile, but in my experience sometimes it is just easier to sit down and get it over with. Some days when I pump is the only time I actually sit down.

If you own your own business there are so many details to keep track of. While you are sitting down pumping you can do tasks such as getting caught up on emails. Emails can pile up very quickly. Even if it is just junk mail, you still will have to delete it.

One thing you can do is make phone calls. By doing these things, you can knock out a few tasks for the day while those babies are napping and you are pumping.

If you have a laptop or tablet, you can very easily use this to check emails. Many busy mamas have their own business such as a photography business, selling crafts, blogging, or designing graphics to sell. Pumping can be a perfect time to edit photos.

The same idea goes for those that are graphic designers, writers, bloggers, or any other type of business that uses a computer on a regular basis. Even if you make crafts to sell, you can work on things while you are sitting there. Crocheting is one of my favorites, so if I get a chance to crochet I will definitely do it!

When you feel like you need a break…

Take one!! You are a busy mama that is providing your baby with food. Whether you are a stay-at-home mama or you pump while you work, it is important to just sit and relax. If you catch a break and the baby is napping, take a breath, sit, and pump in the quiet. You deserve it, mama!

Happy Pumping!
